This Act is the Treaty of Waitangi (Removal of Conflict of Interest) Amendment Act . This Act comes into force on the day after the date on which it receives the Royal assent. This Act amends the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975. The purpose of this Act is to remove from the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 the inherent conflict of interest of having a serving Judge of the High Court or Maori Land Court (including the Chief Judge of the Maori Land Court) sit on the Waitangi Tribunal. Section 4 is amended by repealing subsection (2)(a) and substituting the following paragraph: A retired Judge of the High Court or a retired Chief Judge of the Maori Land Court; and that retired Judge is both a member of the Tribunal and its Chairperson, and is appointed by the Governor-General on the recommendation of
