This Act is the Animal Welfare Amendment Act . This Act comes into force on the day after the date on which it receives the Royal assent. This Act amends the Animal Welfare Act 1999. Section 25(a) is amended by— omitting and substituting ; and omitting and substituting . Section 25(b) is amended by omitting and substituting . Section 28 is repealed and the following sections substituted: A person commits an offence if that person wilfully ill-treats an animal with the result that— the animal is permanently disabled; or the animal dies; or the pain or distress caused to the animal is so great that it is necessary to destroy the animal in order to end its suffering; or the animal is seriously injured or impaired.
