This Act is the Environment Canterbury (Temporary Commissioners and Improved Water Management) Act . This Act comes into force on the day after the date on which it receives the Royal assent. The purpose of this Act is to— provide for the replacement of the elected members of the Canterbury Regional Council with commissioners who will act as the Council's governing body until new elected members come into office following the next election; and provide the Council with certain powers that it does not otherwise have to address issues relevant to the efficient, effective, and sustainable management of fresh water in the Canterbury region.
