This Act is the Mental Health Act . This Act comes into force on . However, , in so far as it relates to of , comes into force on the day after Royal assent. The purpose of this Act is to provide for compulsory mental health assessment and care in a manner that— promotes the decision-making capacity of tāngata whaiora, including while they are subject to compulsory care; and improves equity in mental health outcomes among New Zealand’s population groups by striving to eliminate mental health care disparities, in particular for Māori; and the rights of tāngata whaiora; and protects the safety and well-being of tāngata whaiora and .
